Ah, the Caped Crusader, the Dark Knight, the great winged vigilante bringing justice to the mean streets of Gotham City … Some 80 years after Bill Finger and Bob Kane penned the first adventures of one of America’s most cherished fictional characters, Batman still thrills and entertains. And the Batman’s presence spans the mediums: His exploits have been rendered in comic books, comic strips, movie serials, the infamous TV show, animated TV shows, film (full-on 12 including ensemble pics as of January 2021) … and slots!
The folks at casino game software developers/producers Nextgen present the Spartanly-titled Batman as part of their six-pack’s worth of slot machines starring DC Comics superheroes. As is the case with the other titles in the line (Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Justice League and Superman: Last Son of Krypton), the Batman slot isn’t so much based on one particular illustrative style, nor on Adam West’s, Christian Bale’s or Tim Burton’s spins on the characters, but instead are original yet recognizable takes on Batman, Gotham and environs. The result is a style similar to that of the Detective Comics series of the 1970s/early 80s, when guys like Neil Adams and Denny O’Neil were in charge of Bat-adventuring at DC. (Not that this writer is a comic-book geek or anything…)
The Batman slot is played on a 5x4 game board, with 50 paylines to wager on, plus a 10-coin “bonus bet” (more on this below), which jacks up your betting to 60 coins ranging in denomination from 1¢ to $10 per spin.
The actual backstory and story line are indeterminate, but naturally that perfidious Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker, is stirring up nastiness. These two along with the often hapless Commissioner Gordon are included in the symbol set, which is otherwise packed with the Joker's favorite playing card (which, in spite of the trappings, looks distinctly 1940s-style), his acid-shooting lapel flower, a Batarang or two, the Batmobile and other wonderful toys.
If you’re playing the bonus bet – which really should have been entitled the “Bat Bonus Bet” or even the “Bat Bet” – a special symbol is added to the reels. Land three of these on a single spin to launch the “Descent Into Madness” feature after cashing in on up to 100x (!) the wager.
You bet your chiroptera! As in the other NextGen DC Comics superhero slots games, you’ll want to watch reels 1 and 5 for a couple of special symbols. In the Batman slot, the appearance of Commissioner Gordon and the Bat-signal in either order in reels 1 and 5 win the player entry into a re-spins feature. Three respins are given, with stacked sticky wilds in play. Racking up the wilds will amount to a tremendous payout on just the three spins.
If you think we’re gonna replicate the cheesy Batman TV show theme, you’re madder than the Mad Hatter (part of Batman’s ridiculously mammoth-sized rogue’s gallery). However, we will say this: In Gotham City, crime doesn’t pay – but the Batman slot game sure can!
